John P. Riley ('96)
JOHN P. RILEY JR. '96 had a highly successful rowing career at Rhode Island. A 10-time member of the U.S. National Rowing Team, he participated in eight world championships, claiming a gold medal in 1986 and a bronze in 1987. He had five first-place finishes at the U.S. Rowing Championships, won a silver medal in the 1990 Goodwill Games, and finished first ten times at the U.S. Nationals. He competed in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games and from 1985-89 had top three finishes in more than 30 races at the Canadian Henley Regatta. In 1988 he won the Royal Henley Regatta in England and retired following an automobile accident during the 1995 Olympic Trials. He was inducted into the U.S. Rowing Hall of Fame in 1996 and later was coach for Riley Rowing and the rowing director for the Union Boat Club.
