Russell Named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week

KINGSTON, R.I. - Freshman Fatts Russell was named the Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.

Russell had a breakout week for the Rams, scoring exactly 20 points in back-to-back games, helping Rhode Island defeat Brown, 86-62, and then Providence, 75-68, last week. The Philadelphia native came off the bench in both games and shot .560 from the floor (14-of-25), including 7-of-12 (.583) from beyond the arc, for the week. Against Brown he had four assists with no turnovers while shooting 5-for-6 (.833) from 3-point range. Then versus Providence, he grabbed five rebounds and shot .500 from the floor (7-for-14). Russell also averaged 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

This is the second straight week a Rhode Island player has earned weekly league honors. Senior Jared Terrell was the conference Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 27.

Rhode Island is just outside of the Associated Press Top 25 this week after receiving 73 votes in the latest poll. USC (90 votes) was 25th, followed by Texas Tech (82), UCLA (75) and the Rams. On Wednesday, Rhody travels to Alabama, which received 21 votes in this week's poll.
