Rhode Island to Play West Virginia in Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Rhode Island will take on West Virginia in the opening game of the annual Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase presented by Citi on Sunday, Dec. 16 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame officially announced the matchup as part of the triple header event. Other games in the Holiday Showcase presented by Citi will be Tulsa taking on Dayton and Drexel playing Quinnipiac.

"The Basketball Hall of Fame is pleased to return to Mohegan Sun for the Holiday Showcase presented by our newest partner, Citi," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. "The six teams participating, and their fans, are sure to have a memorable day of basketball in a beautiful venue this holiday season."

Rhode Island and West Virginia are both coming off runs to the NCAA Championship. The Rams advanced to the Round of 32 for the second straight season before falling to Duke.

"The Basketball Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase is one of the premiere events in college basketball and we are honored to take part," Rhode Island head coach David Cox said. "The opportunity to face a Top 25 program like West Virginia - and a Hall of Fame-nominated coach in Bob Huggins - is one we relish. It will only help us be better prepared for conference play."

Huggins - who was a finalist for induction into the Hall of Fame this year - led West Virginia to the Sweet 16 for the eighth time since 1998 before losing to eventual champion Villanova.

"We are certainly looking forward to participating in the Basketball Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase against Rhode Island," Huggins said. "Anytime you have the opportunity to play in a special non-conference event you jump on it. Rhode Island has had a lot of success recently, and I'm sure our fans recall our history with them dating back to the Atlantic 10 days. We're happy to be a part of this event and for the continued exposure for our basketball program."

General public tickets will go on sale Friday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. ET via all Ticketmaster outlets and the Mohegan Sun Arena box office. Game time, television details and an exclusive Citi-pass pre-sale opportunity will be released at later date.
