Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Bracket Revealed

KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island will face Bucknell in the opening round of the 2018 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, tournament officials announced Wednesday afternoon.

Bucknell clinched the Patriot League regular-season title for the seventh time in the last eight years in 2018. Getting Bucknell in the opening round gives the Rams a fourth NCAA Championship team from last season on its non-conference schedule. Bucknell – which ended last season No. 80 in RPI – joins College of Charleston, Providence and West Virginia. In addition, Rhody also has 2018 NIT teams Middle Tennessee State and Harvard on it schedule.

A potential fifth NCAA Championship team looms in the semifinals. The winner of the Rhode Island-Bucknell game will face the winner of TCU-Charlotte in the semifinals. TCU ended the 2017-18 season ranked No. 26 nationally in RPI after earning a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Championship last year.

Each game of the 2018 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic will be carried on the ESPN family of networks.

The tournament will mark Rhode Island's first trip to Hawaii since the 1999-2000 Big Island Classic. That year, Rhode Island went 2-1 while playing Santa Clara, Cleveland State and Mercer. This will be Rhody's fifth trip to Hawaii overall. The Rams went in 1970-71 and then played in the Rainbow Classic in both 1977-78 and 1995-96.
