KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island golf team opens the spring portion of its schedule March 19-20 at UNC Wilmington's Seahawk Invitational. The two-day tournament will be played at the Country Club of Landfall.
In addition to the host Seahawks, URI will go up against Akron, Army West Point, Campbell, Cleveland State, Davidson, 11th-ranked Kent State, 26th-ranked North Carolina, Richmond, Rutgers and South Alabama.
"The guys have worked incredibly hard in the off-season but we've been bitten by the injury bug," head coach Gregg Burke said. "Chris Houston and Brody King were in casts for wrist injuries for a long time so we'll have to see how they hold up under more play. We've had a concussion, back spasms, and a fainting spell that brought five stitches. We spent as much time in the training room as we did hitting balls."
The Rams - who were picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10's preseason coaches poll - will rely on the veteran leadership of senior captain Billy Walthouse and graduate transfer Chris Houston.
"This is a special group because of Billy's leadership and Chris' experience," Burke added. "We have five tournaments to see if we can join the ranks of some of the all-time great Rhode Island teams. Time will tell."
