Perez, Wilson Tabbed As Captains for 2017-18 Season

KINGSTON, R.I. – Senior Charise Wilson and redshirt-sophomore Laura Perez have been named as captains of the Rhode Island women's basketball team for the 2017-18 season.

The guards were chosen in a team vote, head coach Daynia La-Force said.

"The team has chosen captains they believe can lead them both on and off the court.  This honor comes with much responsibility," La-Force said. "This season, our goals are to foster better team chemistry, to continue to develop a culture of accountability and to bring about a championship mentality in every aspect of the program. These two young ladies have proven to buy into these concepts and therefore have been rewarded with this honor."

Wilson – one of the most decorated players in program history – will serve as a captain for the second consecutive season. A three-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection, she has started all 82 games she has played over the last three seasons. She enters the season ranked fifth in program history with 1,420 points and is the only Ram female to make at least 50 3-point baskets in three consecutive seasons. Last season, she set program single-game records with 38 points and 15 field goals against Samford.

Perez suffered a season-ending injury just two games into the 2016-17 season. Strong in the classroom, she carried a 4.0 grade-point average as an accounting major. Before coming to Rhode Island, she was a starter for Mexico at both the FIBA U17 World Championship and the FIBA U18 Americas Championship in 2014. She was a captain for those teams as well.

Rhode Island will embark on an international trip in August. The Rams will depart August 25 on a trip that will feature games in Lisbon, Portugal and Barcelona, Spain against international competition.
