KINGSTON, R.I. – Incoming Rhode Island freshman Marta Vargas has been named to the Portuguese U-18 National Team that will compete at the U-18 Women's European Championship in Dublin, Ireland this month.
Vargas – a native of Amadora, Portugal – was one of 12 women named to the roster. The 5-9 guard has played at different levels of the Portuguese National Team program for several years. She was named the Young MVP for the Round of 18 of the Portuguese Senior League for the 2016-17 season and has been part of a number of international championship teams for Portugal.
From Aug. 4-13, Vargas will represent Team Portugal at the U-18 Women's European Championship, which has teams from 24 countries competing in it. Portugal will play in Group A, along with Poland, Finland, Luxembourg, Estonia and Bulgaria.
