Rams Win Sixth Atlantic 10 Championship

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - 
Rhode Island won its fourth Atlantic 10 Championship in the last seven years Saturday, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship in the process.

The Rams - the top-ranked team in the A-10 entering the weekend - swept the field in both the Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+ flights. With 51 team points, Rhode Island held off Massachusetts (46) and George Wasington (44) to win the sixth league title in program history. 

The Varsity 8+ boat of coxswain Lucy MoyesEmily WinslowErika PenaKiana AndersonMekenzie Mattheson, Allie ReillyKatie ShattuckKatie Usher, and Meghan Ellis held off UMass and George Washington in the V8 Grand Final. The Rams finished in a time of 6:37.501, less than three seconds ahead of Massachusetts (6:40.238).

The result was similar in the Second Varsity 8 Grand Final. The team of coxswain Karen Petrik, Courtney Harrington, Maddie Van Ummersen, Kelsey Williams, Lauren Smith, Madalyn Saporito, Sage Iacovazzi, Jennae Alexander and Brooke McMahon posted the fastest time in the qualifying heats, then beat George Washington by just over three seconds in the Grand Final. Rhode Island's time of 6:51.217 kept GW (6:54.335) and UMass (6:55.232) at an arm's length.

The team of coxswain Tory Bauer, Kira McCully, Sarah Dudinski, Chandler Fisher and Erin Shober provided a fourth-place finish in the Varsity 4+ Grand Final. That gave Rhody six team points in the final team standings.

By winning the Atlantic 10 Championship, Rhode Island earned the third automatic bid to the NCAA Championship in program history. The Rams have previously competed in the national finals in 2016 and 2013. The NCAA Championship will be held at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla. from May 25 through May 27.
