Contract Will Not Be Renewed for Softball Coach Layton

KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Rhode Island will not renew the contact of softball coach Erin Layton, Director of Athletics Thorr Bjorn announced on Monday.

"I would like to thank Erin Layton for her seven years of service to the University of Rhode Island," Bjorn said. "We wish her luck in her future endeavors."

In seven seasons at Rhode Island, Layton was 87-260-2 overall and 28-111-2 in Atlantic 10 play. In her second season, Layton led the Rams to a spot in the A-10 championship tournament, as Rhode Island went 8-12 in conference play and finished sixth in the standings. The Rams have not made it back to the conference tournament since.

A national search for Rhode Island's next softball head coach will commence immediately. No further comment from the athletics department regarding the search will be made until a new coach has been appointed.
