How It Happened
A six-run rally in the top of the fifth inning put the game away as visiting Fordham knocked off Rhode Island in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.
Rhode Island (12-23, 3-10 Atlantic 10) only trailed 3-1 through three innings. The Ram run came on a solo shot by Ali Summers to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Rhody was unable to hold the powerful Fordham (30-16, 13-2 A-10) lineup at bay, as the guests scored three times in the top of the fourth and six times in the top of the fifth to put the eight-run rule in play.
Inside the Box Score
- Ali Summers hit her third home run of the season and also walked once.
- Jenna Cubello, Lauren Klepchick and Marylynn Muldowney each singled once.
- Fordham (30-16, 13-2 A-10) got a combined six runs from the first three hitters in its lineup. Leadoff hitter Jessica Hughes scored three times, Amy Van Hoven had three hits, four runs batted in and two runs scored, and Sydney Canessa had four RBI and one run scored.
After Rhode Island's first batter, Ali Summers, hit a solo home run, Fordham starter Lauren Quense retired the next eight batters she faced. The streak was broken when Summers walked with two outs in the bottom of the third.
