How It Happened
Rhode Island's season ended with a 6-4 loss to La Salle Sunday afternoon.
The Rams (12-32, 3-18 Atlantic 10) came out swinging in the bottom of the first inning, hitting three solo home runs in a span of four batters. Sophomore Paige Julich got the outburst started with a shot to left center, and on the very next pitch, Jenna Cubello drilled a homer to straightaway center. After the second out of the inning, senior Lauren Klepchick hit a long ball to left center.
La Salle (16-28, 7-14 A-10) tied the game in the top of the third when Mackenzie Obert knocked a three-run home run. The Explorers took their first lead in the fifth with a pair of runs, and added an insurance run in the seventh.
Rhody got the potential tying run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Emily Hendricks reached on a walk and came around to score when Olivia Hendricks drilled a double over the centerfielder's head. The game ended on a groundout, allowed La Salle to complete the series sweep.
Inside the Box Score
- Sophomore Paige Julich drilled her seventh home run of the season in the first inning. She is just the seventh player in team history to hit as many as seven home runs in one season.
- Junior Jenna Cubello hit her 10th career home run one pitch after Julich's blast. She is now in sole possession of 10th place in program history in career home runs.
- Senior Lauren Klepchick hit the third solo shot of first inning for the Rams, her first blast of the year. It was her fifth career homer.
- Senior Olivia Hendricks doubled and drove in one. Her final career RBI brought in her twin sister, Emily, as the pair combined for Rhode Island's final run of the season.
With three home runs in the bottom of the first inning, Rhode Island matched its single-game high for the season.
