How it Happened
A late explosion by Oakland turned a tie game into an eight-run loss for Rhode Island as the Rams fell 10-2 in six innings Saturday at the Racer Classic.
With the score tied 2-2, Oakland (5-10) used three hits, five walks and a hit batter to score eight runs and end the game. The big hit in the inning was a three-run double by Cammie Brummitt.
Rhode Island (1-11) briefly held a lead midway through the game. Tied 1-1, Emily Zembik reached on an infield single with two outs. Rebecca Simms followed with an infield single of her own, and Erica Robles delivered a single to right field to drive in Zembik.
The lead was short lived, as Oakland came right back in the bottom of the frame to even things up. Neither team scored in the fifth, setting up the big rally for Oakland in the bottom of the sixth.
Inside the Box Score
- Junior Rebecca Simms continued to swing a hot bat, getting a double and single in four at bats. She has three hits over her last two games, including a pair of doubles.
- Sophomore Erica Robles singled and drove in one run. She is now batting a team-best .333.
- Freshman Emily Zembik singled, walked, scored one run and drove in one run from the leadoff spot in the order.
- Senior Brianna Heller made her first start as the designated player and had a single. Junior Adriana Toro and redshirt sophomore Melanie Martire also singled once each.
Stat of the Day
5 – Oakland drew five walks during its eight-run rally in the sixth inning. Rhode Island did not allow any walks through the first five innings.
Rhode Island closes out play at the Racer Classic with a single game against Ill.-Chicago at 9 a.m. Sunday.
