How It Happened
Fordham freshman Paige Rauch dominated both at the plate and in the circle as Fordham swept Rhode Island 10-0 and 7-0 in an Atlantic 10 doubleheader Saturday.
Over the two games, Rauch was 4-for-4 with three home runs, one triple, four walks, five runs scored and five runs batted in. In the second game, she pitched a one-hit shutout with five strikeouts to cause Rhode Island to fall to 9-25 overall and 3-7 in A-10 play.
Game 1 – Fordham 10, Rhode Island 0 (5 inn.)
Rauch led off the game with a solo home run down the right field line. Through the first three innings, that was the lone run of the game until Fordham scored four unearned runs in the top of the fourth to break the game open. Rauch made the score 3-0 with her second blast of the game. Fordham sealed the game when Madi Shaw hit a grand slam in the top of the fifth.
Game 2 – Fordham 7, Rhode Island 0
As she did in the first game, Rauch led things off with a solo home run. A two-run home run by Chelsea Skrepenak following an intentional walk to Rauch in the top of the fifth opened a 4-0 lead, giving Ruach all the run support she needed to improve to 9-1 on the season.
Inside the Box Score
- Junior Becca Rogers cruised through the first 3.2 innings of the first game for Rhode Island. After the solo shot by Rauch to start the game, Rogers did not allow any runs until the fourth inning, when a two-out error led to four unearned runs. Rogers struck out seven batters in her 3.2 innings of work.
- Redshirt sophomore Melanie Martire had Rhode Island's lone hit of the first game, a double. She also walked in the second game.
- Martire was the only Rhode Island batter to reach scoring position in either game.
- Sophomore Erica Yeager singled in the fifth inning of Game Two to break up Rauch's no-hit bid.
