Rogers, Villarreal Collect Weekly Honors From Atlantic 10

KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island senior Becca Rogers was named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, and freshman Sami Villarreal was the league's Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

Rogers was dominant in the circle all weekend, going 3-0 in three starts while leading the Rams to the team title at the Charleston Invitational. Rogers pitched a one-hit shutout against the ACC's North Carolina State on Friday, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in a win over Marist Saturday, then closed the weekend with six shutout innings against Bryant.

Overall, Rogers had a 0.74 earned run average, allowing just two earned runs in 19.0 innings of work. She also struck out 23 batters while walking six and allowing just seven hits.

Villarreal continued her impressive start to her career, batting .400 (6-for-15) with one home run, one double, four runs scored and four walks over five games. She had pair of multi-hit games and recorded a .526 on-base percentage for the week.

Villarreal is the second Ram to win Rookie of the Week honors already. Faith Musselwhite earned the recognition two weeks ago.

Rhode Island – which has won three straight games and four of its last five overall – travels to the Maryland Invitational this weekend to play five games from Thursday through Saturday.
