How it Happened
The Rhode Island Rams (3-5) fell to the Northeastern Huskies (2-5) in four sets in their second match as the host of the Art Carmichael Invitational.
The Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead in set one with a pair of kills from Jenna McGuire and Marie Gillcrist, but a 6-2 Huskies run gave Northeastern a 14-10 lead. Led by a pair of kills from Live Lunde Fossdal, the Rams responded with a 6-0 run of their own to grab a 16-14 lead. After Rhody built their lead to 21-18, the Huskies battled back with 6 consecutive points to take a 24-21 lead. Lunde Fossdal ended the run with her sixth kill of the set before Athena Ardila's kill took the set.
The Rams and Huskies traded blows in the second set, with Northeastern taking a 9-5 lead before Rhody took a 10-9 lead with three kills from Rachel Lynne Cox. The Huskies used a 7-0 run to build a 16-10 advantage. The Rams stormed back, and with a pair of service aces from Lunde Fossdal, they retook a 22-20 lead. The Rams held on, and a Jenna McGuire kill gave the Rams the second set, 25-23.
In the third set, the Rams jumped to a 3-1 lead with a pair of Northeastern attack errors. Rhode Island then took a 17-13 lead following Northeastern's fourth attack error of the set. However, the Huskies responded with a 6-0 run to take a 19-17 lead. Lunde Fossdal's 14th kill of the night knotted the score at 20-20, but three Rhode Island errors gave Northeastern the third set, 25-22.
Northeastern opened the fourth set with a 6-0 run, with two kills from Amy Undertown. The Rams took the next two points before four Rhody attack errors gave the Huskies a 10-2 lead. Gillcrist's seventh kill of the match cut the Northeastern lead to 19-11, but it was too little too late, as Northeastern held on to win the fourth set, 25-16.
