KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island freshman
Nikki Fernando was named the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Fernando - a native of Kihei, Hawaii - won both of her singles matches on the week, beating her opponent in straight sets both times. She opened the week with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Providence's Mae Abreau at No. 5 singles on Friday afternoon. On Sunday evening, Fernando played at No. 4 singles against Quinnipiac's Jordan Bradley and won, 6-4, 6-0.
Fernando also split a pair of doubles matches on the week. Against Providence, she and
Klara Nelander fell at No. 2 doubles in a super-tiebreaker, 7-6 (3). Fernando and fellow freshman
Priyanka Shanker paired up for a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. That match was Shanker's collegiate debut.
Fernando improved to 6-3 in singles play and 9-6 in doubles action. She is the second Ram to earn Rookie of the Week honors this season.
Sophie Herrman won the award for the week of Jan. 31.
Rhode Island is back in action Thursday when it travels to Connecticut.
