Hello everyone, welcome back to From the 'Pen! My name is Dom Grillo and I am a senior pitcher here at the University of Rhode Island. I have officially taken over this blog - which was started by Taso Stathopoulos back in the fall - and will be providing regular updates throughout this whole spring semester.
So, for the first time in my four years here, we were able to have our first two preseason practices outdoors. This past Saturday (Jan. 27) was our first official team practice of 2018, and it felt like it was springtime. Temps were in the low 40s and there was no snow on the ground, which made for a great day. Not only were we able to go outside, but we also welcomed in a bunch of recruits to campus. Although things were a little hectic - with pitchers throwing live, and infielders and outfielders getting their reps in outside - the recruits were able to see what a weekend practice in the beginning of the season looked like.
Following practice, everyone headed over to the Ryan Center to watch our men's basketball team - which is currently ranked #21 in the country - hit a buzzer beater to beat Duquesne. All in all, it was a great day!
We were fortunate enough to get back outside on Monday - a luxury we don't often have here in January. Even though it was snowing and raining throughout the majority of the afternoon, it was still great to be able to practice outdoors. We'll be inside for the remainder of the week though as we just got hit by about a half-foot of snow. That's college baseball in the Northeast though - warm and sunny one day, snowing the next!
Just under three weeks until first pitch at Texas A&M… Safe to say we're all looking forward to it!!!
Thank you for tuning in this week! Go Rhody!!
