KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island was one of 10 teams to receive votes in the 2019 STATS FCS Preseason Top 25 poll, which was released Monday afternoon.
The Rams received seven total votes in the national poll. Two-time defending national champion North Dakota State opened the polls at No. 1, receiving 142 first-place votes and 3,971 points overall.
Rhody was one of 10 CAA Football schools to receive votes. Conference favorite James Madison was No. 2 in the poll, getting 14 first-place votes and 3,635 total points. Also in the top 25 were No. 7 Maine, No. 11 Towson, No. 21 Elon and No. 22 Delaware.
Also receiving votes from the CAA were Stony Brook, New Hampshire, Villanova and Richmond. The 10 teams from CAA Football accounted for nearly 20 percent of all teams receiving votes (10 of 57).
In 2019, Rhode Island reached as high as No. 16 in the STATS FCS Top 25. It was the first time since 2005 the Rams had been ranked nationally.
URI opens the 2019 season at Ohio on Saturday, Aug. 30.
