At the Catch: With Erika Pena

Every year, the Rhode Island Rowing team heads down to DeLand, Fla. for its winter training trip. The Rams are able to log thousands of meters on Lake Beresford and the canals extending from it before heading back to Kingston to continue training indoors. This year, the team's seniors will give Rhody fans an inside look at what each day of the training trip is like.

Today's post comes from senior Erika Pena

Day six of our Florida training trip, and Rhode Island stands strong and proud. This morning the Rhode Island weather rolled in with some clouds and temperatures in the forties and we pulled out our long layers for the first time this trip.

We hit the water hard in various boats and executed an intense workout that is a personal favorite of mine: leap frog. With miles of open water, boats competed to keep their bows out ahead.

The practice was challenging, but we powered through and got off the water knowing we got faster and stronger as a team.

Today, we had the afternoon off! We headed to downtown Deland, a quaint town near Stetson University. While some strolled and shopped, others enjoyed some of Deland's restaurants. We returned to the hotel, ready to rest up for what tomorrow has in store.

Happy winter training!
