COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Rhode Island dropped both of its games at the Maryland Softball Invitational on Saturday. The Rams (1-7) fell, 9-0, to Princeton in six innings in the day's opener, and dropped a 9-0 decision to Louisville in five innings.
Princeton 9, Rhode Island 0 (6 Inn.)
The Rams were held to three hits by Princeton starter Callie Jo Varner, who also totaled 10 strikeouts, as the Tigers blanked Rhody, 9-0, in six innings.
Princeton (4-3) led 7-0 after four innings, and put the game away with two more in the top of the sixth for the win.
Louisville 9, Rhode Island 0 (5 Inn.)
Rhody sophomore Tara Hiteman led off the bottom of the first inning with a single to left but that was the only hit Louisville pitcher Catherine Bishop would allow en route to a 9-0 Cardinal win in five innings.
Bishop struck out six in five innings, allowing only two batters to reach base.
Louisville (9-8) hit Rhody starter Jill Anderson (0-4) around for 10 hits and nine runs (six earned) in four innings of work.
The Cardinals plated two runs in the second inning, five in the fourth and two in the fifth to shut the Rams out.
The Rams will finish off the tournament on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. against Central Connecticut.
