KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island split a softball double header with Quinnipiac, Wednesday afternoon, taking the opener, 4-3, but falling 4-2 in the nightcap, at the Rhode Island Softball Complex
In game one, Rhody starter Katie Halcomb threw a complete-game three-hitter, totaling four walks and eight strikeouts to improve to 5-10 this spring, while Alyssa Martino went 1-for-3 with a three-run homerun in the third inning to lead the Rams.
The second game saw Melissa Wilson go 2-for-2 with her second homerun of the day, while Jill Anderson (5-11) threw seven innings of five-hit ball, allowing two earned runs and totaling five strikeouts to take the loss.
In the opener, a third-inning two-out double to shallow left field by Quinnipiac's Angela Casella fell in to score Maria Brown from first for the first run of the game. Casella advanced to third on a wild pitch, before Krista Seeman walked. Casella advanced home after the Rams failed to catch Seeman who was stealing second to make it a 2-0 game.
The Rams bounced back with four runs in the bottom of the inning on Martino's three-run shot to centerfield, followed by a solo shot to left by Wilson that gave the Rams a 4-2 cushion.
With one out in the fifth inning, QU's Emily Bellush reached on a slow roller in front of home plate, before advancing to second on a bunt single by Brown. Casella followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third, before Bellush came across on a wild pitch for the eventual 4-3 final.
In game two, Rhody took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. MaryBeth Ball led off with a double to left center, before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gentile. Tara Hiteman dropped a single into shallow left field to bring Ball home for the game's first run.
Quinnipiac tied the score in the fourth inning. Pinch-runner Heather Maffeo, who was inserted on first base after Katie Allendorfer walked, advanced to second on a bunt single by Casella. Maffeo advanced to third on a fly-out to right field by Christine Bourdeau and scored on a failed run-down attempt to get Casella out between first and second.
Rhody reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Wilson lined the first pitch she saw over the centerfield wall for her second round-tripper of the day to make the score 2-1.
QU tied the score back up after Kelly Wall led off the fifth inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, a fielding error by Darci Borden at second base allowed Wall, who was running on the play, to score from second.
The Bobcats brought two more runs across in the sixth after Anderson loaded the bases with three walks during the inning. With two outs, Brown singled to right field to plate Bourdeau and Jenna Henry for the 4-2 lead.
The Rams led off the sixth inning with consecutive singles by Martino and Wilson and loaded the bases after Darci Borden drew a walk. QU avoided any damage by turning a triple play after Shelly Petersen lined out to third, where Martino was caught off the base and Wilson was picked off of second.
The Rams return to action this Sunday (April 15) with an Atlantic 10 doubleheader at Charlotte, starting at 12:00 noon.
