PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Rhode Island split a softball doubleheader at Brown, Tuesday, winning the opener, 3-2, while falling, 8-7, in the nightcap. Melissa Wilson finished the first game 1-for-2 with a run scored and a game-winning RBI double in the sixth inning, while going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI in the second game for the Rams.
In game one, Rhody starter Katie Halcomb allowed six hits and two runs, while totaling three strikeouts against only one walk to pick up the complete-game victory.
Brown took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Andrea Browne led off with a double and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch.
The Rams would tie the game two innings later after Danielle Quimby led off with an infield single, before coming around to score later in the inning on a RBI single to centerfield by Jackie Kampmeier.
In the fifth inning, the Bears would take a 2-1 lead after Whitney Lewis led off with an infield single and scored three batters later on a RBI single by Kaitlyn Laabs.
The Rams would bounce right back with the winning runs in the next inning. Alyssa Martino started things off with a lead-off walk, before coming all the way around to score on Wilson's double to centerfield. Wilson would advance to third on a single by Tara Hiteman, before scoring on an error by the Brown shortstop as Hiteman stole second. Halcomb would retire six of the next seven Bears to preserve the victory.
In the nightcap, the Rams plated a run in the second inning as MaryBeth Ball reached on an error by the Bear second baseman, and later scored on an error by the third baseman, before bringing around two more in the third on an RBI double by Wilson and an RBI single by Martino to lead, 3-0.
Brown would come back with a run in the bottom of the third, before scoring five runs on five hits in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead.
Rhody would tie the game with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to make the score, 5-5. Stefani Poedubicky and Kampmeier would lead off the fifth with back-to-back singles and would both come around to score on attempts to throw out Rams stealing second. Poedubicky would score again in the sixth on a Wilson RBI single to leftfield that tied the game, 6-6.
Two Brown runs in the bottom of the sixth gave the host team a 8-6 lead. The Rams (9-28) were able to bring one run across in the seventh as Shelly Petersen scored after Leah DiBussolo reached on an error by the Brown (8-29) first baseman. Rhody would load the bases with two outs but could not bring the tying run around.
URI returns to action this Friday at 3:00 p.m., hosting George Washington in an Atlantic 10 conference matchup at the Rhode Island Softball Complex.
