KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island right fielder Tara Hiteman went 1-for-3 and knocked in the Rams' lone run in a 6-1 loss to visiting La Salle in Atlantic 10 softball Friday afternoon at the URI Softball Complex.
Rhody starter Katie Halcomb took the loss, only allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out seven in seven innings of work.
Two URI errors led to four unearned Explorer runs in the game-breaking fourth inning as La Salle took a 5-0 lead. Laura Dezolt led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a single up the middle by Jen Street to make it 1-0. Back-to-back Rhody fielding errors brought in another Explorer run and loaded the bases before three-straight walks brought in three more runs to give La Salle the 5-0 lead.
Rhode Island (9-33, 2-12 A-10) would get on the board in the sixth inning. Designated player Jackie Kampmeier and shortstop Alyssa Martino drew lead-off walks before both advanced on a passed ball. Hitman grounded out to second base, allowing Kampmeier to score from third to make it a 5-1 game.
La Salle (16-20, 8-8 A-10) put the game away with one more run in the seventh as cather Michelle Sullivan hit a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Christina Tofani from third.
Dezolt picked up the win for La Salle, holding the Rams to four hits while striking out five in the complete- game effort.
The Rams wrap-up their two-game set with La Salle on Saturday, starting at 12:00 p.m., before hosting Fordham on Sunday in a A-10 doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. on Senior Day.
