CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Four Rhode Island players picked up singles victories on the first day of the Harvard Scramble.
Playing against a combination of opponents from Harvard and Boston College, Erin Chratian, Rachel Smilansky, Tiara Higuchi and Paulina Loredo all were victorious in singles action. Higuchi and Loredo both grabbed their wins in straight sets.
Each of Rhody's top five singles players were matched against Boston College opponents. Higuchi, in the No. 3 spot, swept Loren Haukova 6-1, 6-1, while Loredo in the No. 5 spot beat Micayla Casella 6-0, 6-4.
In the top two spots, Chratian and Smilansky each outlasted their opponents in third-set tiebreakers. Chratian beat Hailey Wilcox 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. Smilansky won in a similar fashion, defeating Marion Conklin, 6-1, 4-6, 10-8.
Rhody's Sydney Chratian played a strong match against Harvard's Lauryn Wu. The nail-biter went three sets, with Wu pulling out the 6-3, 5-7, 10-4 win.
