Self Earns AVCA All-East Region Honors

KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island senior Layne Self has been named an AVCA All-East Region Honorable Mention, announced Monday afternoon by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Self is the first Ram to earn AVCA postseason accolades since 2001, when Yolanda Bogacz was a first-team selection.

The Hawthorn Woods, Ill. native finished her senior season as the only Atlantic 10 player ranked fourth or better in both hitting percentage (4th, .339) and blocks per set (t-3rd, 1.31), earning a spot on the All-Conference First Team.

A seven-time A-10 Defensive Player of the Week, she ended her career ranked second all-time in total blocks (491) and is the only player in the rally-point era to even register more than 300. She also tied for 16th in URI history with 961 career kills.

Self was a four-year starter for Rhode Island, helping lead the Rams to 70 wins over the last four seasons. She and fellow seniors Audrey Castro and Callan Kinnan made up URI's winningest senior class in nearly two decades.
