KINGSTON, R.I. – The defending Atlantic 10 champion Rhode Island women's rowing team opens its 2013 season Saturday morning with the annual Resolute Cup and Yankee Cup.
The Rams host Massachusetts, George Washington and Boston College in the event, offering a strong early test. George Washington finished second in the conference to Rhody, while Massachusetts was third in the A-10 a year ago. Boston College is a strong regional team.
"We are excited to begin racing," said Rhode Island head coach Shelagh Donahoe. "The team has worked incredibly hard all year and now the fun part begins. Our goal is always to execute at a high level on race day. We enjoy the challenge of facing strong competition; this weekend will certainly give us a good benchmark for where we are early in the season."
LOOKING BACK
Rhode Island has won the Yankee Cup each of the last three seasons. In 2012, the Rams held off Massachusetts for the title, while New Hampshire took third place. In the Resolute Cup against Boston College, Rhody has won six straight years. Rhode Island's Varsity 8 raced in a time of 7:09.8 to defeat Boston College last year. The Eagles finished the race in a time of 7:19.1.
The Yankee Cup and Resolute Cup competitions are run concurrently.
