The University of Rhode Island Athletic Hall of Fame has a new home in the Thomas M. Ryan Center. The Hall of Fame display contains pictures of inductees along the concourses and in the North and South lobbies of the Ryan Center. A total of 326 University of Rhode Island student-athletes, coaches, administrators and athletic boosters have been enshrined in the University of Rhode Island Athletic Hall of Fame since 1959.

The University of Rhode Island Athletics Department shall administer the biennial University of Rhode Island Athletics Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremony.

Purpose

The purpose of the University of Rhode Island Athletics Hall of Fame is to honor the varsity athletics tradition of the university in the context of the academic experience by:
  • Recognizing former student-athletes, coaches and/or athletics administrators who excelled in URI Athletics;
  • Encouraging current student-athletes to strive to attain the highest standards of performance and conduct; and
  • Calling attention locally, regionally and nationally to URI's Athletics history and tradition.

Hall of Fame Requirements

  • An athlete must have competed two full seasons in one sport or one full season in two or more sports and have attended URI a minimum of two years. The athlete will not be considered until 10 years after his/her class graduates.
  • A coach or athletics administrator must have served at URI for at least five years and have retired (or left the university) three years prior to being selected.
  • The nominee must have departed URI in good standing, and the record of the nominee must be so outstanding that there is no question as to qualifying for the Athletics Hall of Fame.
  • Candidates must be selected via decision of the selection committee.
  • No more than six nominees may be elected to the Athletics Hall of Fame in a single year. There is no limit, however, to the number of times an individual may be considered. However, a candidate must be re-nominated every four (4) years.
  • In exceptional cases, any and/or all of the above requirements may be waived by a unanimous vote of the committee.

Basic Selection Criteria

  • Achievement in athletics competition as demonstrated by post season honors, team leadership, record-setting performances, and/or being the outstanding performer on a team(s), Olympic, or professional sports performance.
  • Participation in multiple sports at the varsity level.
  • General contribution to society as evidenced by leadership in community and/or professional affairs.

NOTE: For formal induction into the URI Athletics Hall of Fame the individual chosen or a representative must be present at the dinner and induction ceremony.

Athletics Hall of Fame Committee

  • The committee will make every effort to have a diverse representation in regards to gender, race, ethnicity, and individuals from different eras (i.e. 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s).
  • Each committee member will serve a maximum of two terms on the committee (with the exception of URI Internal Athletics Staff (i.e. Director of Athletics, Associate Athletics Director for Development, Associate Athletics Director/SWA, Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Communications/Media Relations, and Faculty Athletics Representative).
  • The Alumni Representatives, Athletic Coaches, and Hall of Fame Members will be appointed by the Director of Athletics, Associate Athletics Director/SWA, and Faculty Athletics Representative.
The Athletics Hall of Fame Committee will be comprised of the following:
