Varsity 8+ Boat Reaches NCAA Lower Final Before Competition Halted

SETTING THE SCENE

Poor conditions on the water caused the second day of the NCAA Rowing Championship to be postponed after only a few heats Saturday.

Conditions were so rough that Oklahoma's Second Varsity 8+ boat sank and rowers had to be pulled from the water.

Rhode Island's Varsity 8+ boat was the only one of URI's three vessels to compete. The Rams placed fourth out of five boats in the second of two heats in the Division I Eights C/D semifinals. Rhody finished in a time of 8:15.556, 47 seconds ahead of the boat from Marist.

The Varsity 8+ boat will compete in the Eights Lower Final on Sunday. That race is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and will determine placed 19 through 22 for the Varsity Eights.

In the Second Varsity 8+ bracket, Rhode Island will race at 8:05 a.m. The Rams are in Heat 2 of the II Eights C/D semifinals along with Navy, Boston University, Washington State and Michigan. The top three boats advance to the II Eights C Final at 10:30 a.m., while the fourth- and fifth-place boats will compete in the II Eights D Final at 10:20 a.m.

In the Varsity 4+ bracket, Rhode Island The Varsity 4+ boat is scheduled to race Sunday morning at 8:15 a.m. in Heat 2 of the Fours C/D semifinals. Also in the field will be Boston University, Cornell, UCLA and Harvard. The top three boats advance to the Fours C Final at 10:50 a.m., while the fourth- and fifth-place boats will compete in the Fours D Final at 10:50 a.m.
