Rams Win Fifth Atlantic 10 Outdoor Title in Last Eight Years

FAIRFAX, VA. - The Rhode Island men's track and field team won its 23rd Atlantic 10 Championship Sunday in Fairfax, Va. The team scored 216.5 total points to beat host George Mason by 44 points - the biggest winning margin in the outdoor championship since 2010 - and take home the conference crown. The 216.5 points is the highest score in the championship since 2010, and the 44 point margin was the biggest victory for Rhode Island since 2007.

The Rams swept the conference championships this year, also winning the championship during the indoor season. This is the fifth Atlantic 10 outdoor title for Rhody since 2010, and the Rams' 23rd conference title since the Atlantic 10 Championship began in 1993. In total, Rhode Island had 10 individual champions that led to the team win.

Senior Nigel Hill earned Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Championship and head coach John Copeland was named Men's Coach of the Year for the second straight year.

Decathlon

  • Drew Nealey took the crown in the decathlon with a college-best 6683 points. On day two he placed first in the discus (37.50m), first in the pole vault (4.25m), first in the javelin (52.32m), second in the 1500 meters (4:45.87) and fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (16.50s).
  • Daniel O'Neil placed third with 6146 points. He finished second in the 110 meter hurdles (16.11s), third in the javelin (44.73m), fourth in the 1500 meters (4:50.30), fourth in the discus (32.81m), and fifth in the pole vault (3.45m).
  • Stephen Cirella finished fourth with 5856 total points. He placed second in the pole vault (3.75m), second in the javelin (45.14m) third in the discus (35.90m), fifth in the 110 meter hurdles (17.16s), and sixth in the 1500 meters (5:08.32).

Finals

  • Nigel Hill won the 100 meter dash in 10.59 seconds, a career-best. He also took first in the 200 meter dash (21.19s).
  • Casey Burley won the triple jump with a Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championship meet record of 15.51 meters (50' 10.75") - a record that was previously held by Jimi Tele (George Mason) who had a mark of 15.25 meters (50' .5") in 2015.
  • Nigel Riley placed seventh in the triple jump (14.12m) and Trevor Rooney finished 10th (13.93m).
  • Jack Kahrs won the high jump after clearing 2.12 meters. Eric Wicks cleared 1.97 meters for sixth and Jacob Reilly cleared 1.92 meters for eighth.
  • Joe Maguire finished 15th in the 5000 meters (15:27.67).
  • The 4x100 meter relay team of Nigel Hill, Joseph Carter, Jaleel Felton, and Anthony Delasanta finished third in 41.07 seconds.
  • Derek Jacobs won the discus with a throw of 50.40 meters.
  • Rock Fortna placed 10th in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:55.76.
  • John Stallworth placed third in the 110 meter hurdles final with a time of 14.72 seconds. Adam Franklin (14.77s) and Callan Davies (14.87s) also represented in the final for the Rams.
  • Davies finished sixth in the 400 meter hurdles in 55.64 seconds.
  • Marlon Montague finished fifth in the 400 meter dash final in a college-best 47.32 seconds. Anthony Delasanta (49.93s) placed eighth.
  • The 4x800 meter relay team of Rock Fortna, Shawn Carlson, Nicholas Fitch, and Sam Coppola placed sixth in 7:40.74.
  • The 4x400 meter relay team of Nigel Hill, Marlon Montague, Adam Franklin, and De'Von McGriff finished third in 3:09.95.
  • Ryan Roger placed second in the shot put (15.29m).

ICYMI: Burley Wins Sixth Long Jump Title, Rams Sweep Field Events for First Place After Day One of A-10's

  • Casey Burley won his sixth long jump crown after a season best mark of 7.37 meters. He has now raked in seven A-10 titles.
  • Rhode Island took the 1-2-3-4 in the hammer throw, with Brandon Amo winning his first outdoor title with a mark of 59.89 meters. Mahlik Handley finished second (57.17m), Olusegun Vadis third (55.81m) and Joseph Mattson was fourth (52.03m).
  • Joining Burley in the long jump, Eric Wicks (7.00m), Nigel Riley (6.92m), and Trevor Rooney (6.91m) also earned points for the Rams.
  • Ryan Wilkes won the pole vault after clearing 5.00 meters. Ondrej Honka (4.85m) and William Thibault (4.70m) also placed for points.
  • Nick Danner won the javelin with a throw of 63.44 meters. Greg McManus placed second with a mark of 62.56 meters. Cam Reed (55.88m) and Drew Nealey (53.26m) also earned points for Rhody.
