KINGSTON, R.I. – For the second time in three years, Rhode Island Athletics experienced record-setting levels of financial support from alumni, fans, and friends.

This collective generosity led to $7.6 million in new commitments for the fiscal year. The previous high, accomplished in 2019, was $4.6 million.

Over the last three years, the Athletics Development Office and has brought in more than $14.2 million. One significant area of improvement has been through URI Day of Giving. Last year's effort brought in a record $1.2 million for students, programs, and more, including more than $350,000 specifically for athletics. This year's Day of Giving (urifae.org/urigives) will be on Oct.7.

"The support we receive from our donors and stakeholders is vital in the growth of our entire department," Director of Athletics Thorr Bjorn said. "Collegiate athletics is a partnership venture with our entire community, and the impact of that support is massive. It truly speaks to the work of the Athletics Development Office and URI Foundation & Alumni Engagement to create meaningful connections with our constituents."

Last March, a $3 million gift from Stefan Soloviev and his family toward an $8 million basketball practice facility was announced. This came just two years after a $4.1 million project to install lights and field turf at Meade Stadium.

"Championship expectations are made possible through championship-caliber support," Bjorn said. "Over the last three years, we have seen a significant increase in that support, which has led to tangible, high-impact improvements for our student-athletes."
