John May has joined the University of Rhode Island as its newassistant director of development for athletics.

May comes to Kingston after spending the past year as theassistant director of marketing and corporate relations at theUniversity of Hartford.  While there, he helped to increasecorporate sponsorship figures by 32 percent from the previousfiscal year, while implementing new marketing initiatives that ledto increased attendances and ticket revenue for men's and women'sbasketball.

"He understands theimportance development has within intercollegiate athletics inadvancing the department’s priorities with our loyal alumniand fans.  We will rely on this to help strengthen ourrelationships with current donors, reconnect with those that havegiven in the past and cultivate new support. It is animportant  time for URI athletics to increase its donor baseand overall external support."

In 2011, May earned his MBA from Providence College after servingas a graduate assistant in the athletics marketing office for twoyears.  After completing his graduate studies, he was adevelopment associate in the College's Office of InstitutionalAdvancement

A 2009 graduate of Bryant University, May was a four-year memberof the Bulldogs' men's soccer team and graduated Summa Cum Laudewith a degree in marketing and a minor in communications.
