The Rhode Island Rams improved their record to a perfect 9-0 with an impressive 3-1 victory over the visiting New Hampshire Wildcats at the URI Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. The Rams are off to the best start in school history.
New Hampshire jumped out to an early lead when senior Marky Solomon chipped a shot past Rhode Island goalie Jamie Epperlein at the 5:05 mark to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Rhode Island tied the game at the 24:36 mark when junior Catherine Zanni put in a corner kick to make the score 1-1. The two teams headed into halftime knotted at one apiece.
Rhode Island took a 2-1 lead early in the second half after sophomore Heather Kasparek found junior Shannon Kittelson on a breakaway. Kittelson slipped the ball past the New Hampshire goalie with what would prove to be the game-winner at the 49:12 mark. Senior Laura Seymour capped the scoring on the afternoon for Rhode Island when she headed in a corner kick from freshman Erica Young at the 62:54 mark to make the score 3-1.
Epperlein made two saves in goal for Rhode Island while senior Stephanie Springer made six stops in net for New Hampshire, who fall to 2-6 for the season.
The Rams will return to action on Friday, September 29 when they travel to Duquesne for an Atlantic 10 matchup at 7:00 p.m.
