Sophomore Heather Kasparek scored a goal and assisted on junior Catherine Zanni's game-winning tally with six miutes to play as Rhode Island beat New Mexico, 3-1, on Friday night.
The high-scoring Rams are now 4-0 and are averaging 3.75 goals-per-game this season. The Lobos drop to 2-3.
URI jumped out to an early 1-0 on a goal by senior Mary Drapetis just 1:40 into the game. UNM tied the game in the 37th minute on a goal by senior Jayme Dieringer. The match remained deadlocked until the Rams took the lead in the 84th minute when Zanni scored on a pass from Kasparek. Zanni, who finished second on the team in scoring with 25 points (10g, 5a) in 1999, has now scored in three consecutive matches. Kasparek added an insurance goal late in the game to provide the two-goal margin of victory.
