Women's Soccer Blanks Bonnies 3-0

Oct. 14, 2001

KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior midfielder Catherine Zanni and sophomore forward Erica Young each scored one goal and set up another Sunday as the Rhode Island women (7-3-1, 2-2-1) stayed in contention for an Atlantic 10 Conference playoff berth with a 3-0 soccer win over visiting St. Bonaventure (2-8-1, 1-3).

Zanni, the team leader in goals (5) and total points (12), helped put the Rams on top just 5:31 into the game by slipping a pass into the box to senior forward Shannon Kittelson, who drilled her third goal of the year from 12 yards out.

Kittelson, the Rams' No. 2 all-time scorer, ran her career totals to 46 goals and 110 total points, 15 points shy of a new school scoring record. She outshot St. Bonaventure by herself, 9-7, as the Rams dominated play and rained 18 shots at the Bonnie net.

Young came off the bench to put Rhode Island up 2-0 with 9:39 left in the first half. After intercepting a pass on the right side, she saw the St. Bonaventure goalie out of position and rocketed a 30-yard blast inside the near post for her second goal of the year.

With 16:03 gone in the second half, Young nudged the ball to Zanni on an indirect free kick, and Zanni found the upper left-hand corner from 25 yards out to make it 3-0 and virtually lock up the win.

Senior goalie Kate Hirsch needed to make only four saves to record her third shutout in five starts this season. She lowered her goals-against average to 0.15, with just one goal allowed in 582 minutes.

The Bonnies took only four shots in the first half and didn't get off their fifth until 9:37 remained in the game.
