The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team picked up a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory against George Washington in an Atlantic 10 contest at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex on Friday afternoon.
Rhode Island dominated play early, out shooting George Washington 13-1 in the first 45 minutes. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the second half with each team having scoring chances down the stretch. Rhode Island held a 23-10 advantage in shots at the end of regulation, however, the game was a scoreless tie.
The Rams started out strong in overtime and finally cashed in when senior captain Shannon Kittelson collected a loose ball from a scramble in front of the net and found the top left corner of the net to give the Rams the victory.
Junior Jamie Epperlein made three stops in the win for Rhode Island while Christine O'Malley had 11 in the setback for the Colonials.
Rhode Island, now 9-5-1, 4-3-1 in the Atlantic 10, travel to Richmond for a crucial A-10 contest on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1:00 p.m.
