The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team picked up a thrilling 1-0 double-overtime victory against Fordham in an Atlantic 10 contest in the Bronx, N.Y., on Sunday afternoon.
"Fordham is a tough place to play and we were happy to come out on top," said head coach Geoff Bennett. "We really battled throughout the game and earned a nice victory."
The two teams battled through a scoreless regulation and a 15-minute golden-goal overtime period. Midway through the second overtime period, sophomore Lauren Melofchik took a pass from fellow sophomore Erica Young and notched a shot on goal that was stopped by the Fordham Keeper. Senior captain Catherine Zanni collected the rebound and put in the follow-up shot to give Rhode Island a 1-0 victory at 113:43.
Senior keeper Kate Hirsch made four saves for Rhode Island while Shannon Misiaszek had seven stops for Fordham.
URI, now 6-3 with a 1-2 mark in the Atlantic 10, returns to action on Friday, October 12 when they host Duquesne in an Atlantic 10 contest at 7:00 p.m.
