KINGSTON, R.I. -
The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team battled a through scoreless tie against Duquesne in an Atlantic 10 contest at the URI Soccer Complex on Friday evening.
"I was very proud of our effort tonight," said Rhode Island head coach Geoff Bennett. "I think were one of the best teams in the Atlantic 10 and we proved that again. We weren't able to score again tonight and it cost us."
Rhode Island outplayed Xavier in the first half, out shooting the Musketeers by a 7-2 margin. The Rams had the best opportunity of the game in the 70th minute after senior Liz Singer of Xavier was given a yellow card for tripping in the box. Senior Catherine Zanni took the ensuing free-kick that was saved by junior keeper Megan Veith to preserve the scoreless tie. Both teams would have their chances down the stretch and into the overtime periods. Junior Heather Kasparek has two point-blank shots on goal while the Musketeers also had their shots.
URI junior keeper Jamie Epperlein made three saves in goal while Veith had eight stops in goal for the Masketeers.
Rhode Island, 10-5-2, 5-3-2 in the Atlantic 10, will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 4 when they host Dayton in an A-10 contest at 1:00 p.m.
