PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team dropped the 2001 season opener, 3-0, against Providence at Glay Field on Sunday afternoon.
In the first half, the Rams had an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. Providence keeper Caroline Haines kept the game scoreless, however, as she had three stops to send the game into halftime tied 0-0. Providence got the only goal they would need for the afternoon when Veronica Bakke put in a pass from freshman Maura Roberston at the 51:09 mark. The Friars would add two more goals midway through the second half for the 3-0 victory.
Junior goalkeeper Jamie Epperlein made four stops in goal for Rhode Island, who fell to 0-1 with the setback. The Rams will return to action on Friday, Sept. 6 when they host Ohio University at the URI Soccer Complex at 7:00 p.m.
