Women's Soccer Blanks Vermont, 4-0

Sept. 28, 2001

KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team, currently ranked No. 8 in the Northeast, notched a 4-0 shutout victory against Vermont in a non-conference contest at the URI Soccer Complex on Friday evening. The Rams held the Catamounts to just one shot for the entire game and out-shot Vermont, 16-1. With the win, Rhode Island extended its home-winning streak to 15 games, dating back to the 1999 season.

"Tonight, we did a very good job in the final third of the field, defending the ball. We were also able to finish our shots," said Rhode Island head coach Geoff Bennett. "This was our second shutout of the season and the defense is getting better and better with each game.

Rhode Island scored the only goal it would need when senior captain Catherine Zanni put in a cross from junior Gina Rosen at the 6:03 mark. The Rams went ahead 2-0 when sophomore Sarah Johnston lobbed a shot into the upper right corner after an assist from junior Heather Kasparek at 19:26. With the first half winding down, URI extended their lead to 3-0 when Kasparek crossed a ball into the box that sophomore Dana Mantella headed in at the 43:53 mark. Kasparek capped off the scoring for the evening when she capitalized on a mistake from the Vermont defender and slipped the ball past the goalie at 70:03.

Junior keeper Jamie Epperlein was untested in goal for Rhode Island while junior Brooke Fairbanks made five stops for Vermont.

With the win, Rhode Island improves to 4-3 for the season while Vermont falls to 2-5. The Rams return to action on Sunday, Sept. 30 when they travel to New Hampshire for a non-conference contest at 1:00 p.m.
