Women's Soccer Defeats Fordham, 2-1

Oct. 11, 2002

KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team posted a 2-1 victory against Fordham in an Atlantic 10 contest at the URI Soccer Complex on Friday evening. The win was the third straight for Rhode Island and the fifth in six games for the Rams.

Rhode Island got on the board first when freshman Melanie Kasparek took a pass from seniors Gina Rosen and Rebecca Sorensen after a corner to give the Rams a 1-0 lead at the 22:12 mark. Fordham responded, however, scoring on a corner of their own after senior Kirstin Gellatly put in a deflected shot from sophomore Katharine Noon to knot the game at 1-1 at the 32:07 mark. The two teams would head into the locker room tied at the half.

At the 56:14 mark of the game, junior Sarah Johnston started a breakaway down the right side of the field and fired a pass from the top of the box that was headed in by sophomore Claire Landon to give Rhode Island a 2-1 advantage. Although Fordham had their chances down the stretch, URI held on for the victory.

Senior keeper Jamie Epperlein had five saves in the win for Rhode Island while junior Shannon Misiaszek tallied 10 stops in net for Fordham.

With the win Rhode Island improves to 8-3-1 for the season, a perfect 4-0 in the Atlantic 10 while Fordham falls to 5-7, 1-3 in the league. URI will return to action on Sunday, October 13th when it hosts La Salle in an A-10 matchup at the URI Soccer Complex at 1:00 p.m.
