Senior Heather Kasparek (Trumbull, Conn.) scored three goals during a 13-minute stretch to lead the University of Rhode Island women's soccer to a 3-1 victory against Duquesne in an Atlantic 10 contest in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Sunday afternoon.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half, although Rhode Island held a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal. It was more of the same in the second half until Kasparek put in a pass from freshman Molly Bergren (N. Kingstown, R.I.) to give Rhode Island the 1-0 lead at the 68:01 mark. Kasparek struck again at the 76:57 mark, scoring on an assist from her younger sister Melanie Kasparek (Trumbull, Conn.) with what would prove to be the game-winning goal, giving URI the 2-0 lead.
Heather Kasparek capped off her scoring for the afternoon at the 81:08 mark when she put in a rebound off a missed shot for the hat-trick and a 3-0 lead for URI. Duquesne scored their lone goal of the afternoon when Maureen Moran put in a pass from Katie Ireland at the 87:16 mark.
Senior Jamie Epperlein (Glenelg, Md.) made five saves in goal for Rhode Island while Kristin Scharphorn had 17 stops in net for Duquesne.
With the win, Rhode Island improves to 10-4-1, 6-1-0 in the Atlantic 10 while Duquesne falls to 5-91-, 1-5-1 in conference play.
