Oct. 4, 2002

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Rhode Island women's soccer squad notched a thrilling 2-1 upset victory against Dayton in an Atantic 10 contest at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio on Friday evening. The Rams snapped the Flyers conference home winning streak that dated back to Oct. 1, 1999.

The two teams battled through a scoreless first half with Dayton holding an 8-6 advantage in shots. Early in the second half, Rhode Island got on the board first when freshman standout Melanie Kasparek put in a pass from junior Sarah Johnston from eight-yards out to give the Rams a 1-0 lead at the 60:10 mark. Dayton responded when Reba Sedaleck headed in a pass from Liz Brown to knot the game at 1-1 at the 70:39 mark.

After Dayton was whistled for a foul at midfield, sophomore Claire Landon served a pass to the top of the box where senior Rebecca Sorensen blasted in a shot to the far post at the 80:13 mark. That would prove to be the game-winner as the Rams held on for the 2-1 victory.

Senior goal keeper Jamie Epperlein had three saves for Rhode Island in the victory while Stephanie Weisenfeld had three stops in the setback.

With the win, Rhode Island improves to 6-3-1 overall, a perfect 2-0-0 in the Atlantic 10 while Dayton falls to 7-3-0, 1-0-0 in conference play. The Rams will return to action on Sunday, October 6th when they travel to Xavier for an A-10 contest at 1:00 p.m.
