Final Stats

KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island women's soccer squad posted an impressive 3-1 victory against Xavier in an Atlantic 10 contest at the URI Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. The game was played during periods of rain on a very slick field.

The two teams battled back and forth throughout the first half before Rhode Island got on the board first when senior Sarah Johnston served a ball into the box where it was collected by sophomore Megan Kasparek who fed her twin sister Melanie Kasparek with a pass. Melanie Kasparek blasted in a shot from 10 yards out to give the Rams a 1-0 lead at the 29:28 mark. URI took the one-goal lead into halftime.

Xavier evened the game early in the second half when freshman Amber Selvis started a breakaway down the left side of the field. Selvis then passed on the run to sophomore Angie Scarlato who fed junior Lauren Giesting. Giesting then slipped the ball into the lower left corner of the net to knot the game at 1-1 at the 56:18 mark. Rhode Island responded quickly, however, when freshman Lauren Forgione started a breakaway down the right side of the field and found a wide-open Claire Landon in the middle of the field. Landon then blasted a shot into the upper right corner to give the Rams the 2-1 lead at the 62:57 mark. The Rams added an insurance goal late in the game when Johnston capitalized on a mistake from the Xavier defense and put in an unassisted goal, giving the Rams the 3-1 advantage at the 85:24 mark.

Freshman Melissa Bargione made four saves in the win for Rhode Island while Andrea Garber had two stops in the setback for Xavier.

With the win Rhode Island improves to 4-7-1, 2-3 in the Atlantic 10 while Xavier falls to 6-6-1, 2-3 in conference play. The Rams will return to action on Friday, October 17th when they travel to the Bronx to face Atlantic 10 foe Fordham at 2:00 p.m.
