The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team posted a thrilling 2-1 double overtime victory against La Salle in Philadelphia, Pa., on Sunday afternoon.
Rhode Island got on the board first when junior Kelly McTurk put in an unassisted goal at the 28:16 mark to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. The Rams controlled the action in the first half and took the one goal lead into halftime.
It was more of the same in the second half until La Salle finally got on the board, knotting at the game at 1-1 when Alexiz Petrucci put in a pass from Anne Shovin and Heather Barclay at the 83:40 mark. The game would then head into overtime, tied at 1-1. After a scoreless first overtime period, the Rams scored early in the second overtime session when sophomore Megan Kasparek put in a pass from her twin sister Melanie Kasparek to give the Rams a 2-1 victory at the 103:14 mark.
Freshman Melissa Bargione made four stops in goal for Rhode Island while Marisa Suarez made six stops in the setback for La Salle.
Rhode Island improves to 5-7-2, 3-3-1 in the Atlantic 10 with the victory while La Salle falls to 2-10-1, 2-5 in the Atlantic 10. The Rams will return to action on Friday, October 24th when they host St. Bonaventure in an Atlantic 10 contest at the URI Soccer Complex at 3:30 p.m.
