Box Score
KINGSTON, R.I. -
Megan and Melanie Kasparek combined for all four goals and three assists as the University of Rhode Island women's soccer team defeated Duquesne 4-0 Sunday in an Atlantic 10 Conference game at the URI Soccer Complex.
The sophomore twins from Trumbull, Conn. each scored two goals, with Melanie assisting on both of Megan's goals and Megan providing the assist on one of Melanie's tallies.
It was the most goals that the Kasparek sisters have teamed up to score in a game and the first time both players scored in the same game this season. In a game against George Washington last year both Megan and Melanie and their older sister Heather Kasparek each tallied a goal. Melanie scored two goals and Heather, a senior on last year's team, scored one in a win over Temple last fall.
Melanie now leads the team with 12 goals and has scored two goals in a game four times this season, including both games this weekend.
The Rams moved their unbeaten streak to six games, having won five and tied one in that stretch. Rhode Island improved to 7-7-2 and 5-3-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Duquesne dropped to 8-8-2 and 4-4-1 in the Atlantic 10.
Megan Kasparek started the scoring 27:47 into the game, one-timing a cross from Melanie and to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. Exactly two minutes later, Melanie again found Megan about 18 yards out and Megan lofted a shot over the keeper's head for a 2-0 lead 29:47 into the match. Just over two minutes passed before Megan crossed the ball to Melanie, and Melanie blasted a shot from outside the 18-yard box that found the back of the net for a 3-0 lead at the 32:08 mark.
Sophomore Kirsten Marra (Wallingford, Conn.) posted the shutout with three saves in goal for the Rams. Rhode Island out-shot Duquesne 19-4 on the game.
This was the last home game for the Rams, and the last game at the URI Soccer Complex for seniors Sarah Johnston (New Britain, Pa.), Erica Young (Southington, Conn.), Sarah McCalligett (Lawrenceville, N.J.), Danica Ghegan (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), Lauren Melofchik (Long Branch, N.J.), Dana Mantella (Naperville, Ill.) and Shannon Dinneen (Monroe, Conn.). The Rams return to action on Friday at Saint Joseph's at 7 p.m. and finish up the regular season next Sunday at Temple at 1 p.m.
