Women's Soccer Falls To Saint Joseph's, 2-1

Philadelphia, Pa. - The University of Rhode Island women's soccer squad dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision against Saint Joseph's in an Atlantic 10 contest at Finnesey Field in Philadelphia, Pa., on Friday evening. The loss snapped a six-game streak for the Rams that saw them not lose a game.

Rhode Island jumped out to an early lead when junior Claire Landon put in a cross from senior Lauren Melofchik to give the Rams a 1-0 lead at the 15:33 mark. The Rams controlled the play in the first half and held a 9-3 advantage in shots, taking the one goal lead into halftime.

Saint Joseph's responded in the second half when Jen Harris put in a long pass from Jess Daugherty to knot the game at 1-1 at the 68:06 mark. The Hawks scored what would prove to be the game-winner when Megan Schutt collected a loose ball in the Rhode Island end of the field and put in a shot from 30 yards out to give the Hawks the 2-1 lead at the 81:05 mark. SJU would then hold on for the 2-1 victory.

Sophomore Kirsten Marra had four saves in the setback for Rhode Island while Nicole DiEnna stopped three shots for the win for Saint Joseph's.

With the loss Rhode Island falls to 7-8-2, 5-4-1 in the Atlantic 10 while Saint Joseph's falls to 8-7-1, 6-4-0 in conference play. The Rams can clinch a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship with a win against Temple on Sunday afternoon.
