The University of Rhode Island women's soccer squad dropped a 1-0 decision against George Washington in an Atlantic 10 matchup in Mt. Vernon on Sunday afternoon.
Rhode Island and George Washington battled back and forth throughout the first half with the Rams holding a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore Melanie Kasparek and junior Claire Landon each had three quality shots on goal in the setback for the Rams. It was the team's second-straight shutout.
George Washington responded in the second half, however, when Kim Warner put in a header from Sarah Sample into the upper right corner of the net to give the Colonials the 1-0 lead at the 85:37 mark. GWU would then hold on for the one-goal victory.
Freshman Melissa Bargione made eight saves in goal for Rhode Island while Anna Handelik had eight stops in net for George Washington.
With the loss Rhode Island falls to 2-7-1, 0-3 in the Atlantic 10 while George Washington improves to 8-2, 2-0 in league play. The Rams will return to action on Friday, October 10th when they host Dayton in an Atlantic 10 contest at the URI Soccer Complex at 3:30 p.m.
