Philadelpia, Pa. -
The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team earned a bid to their second-straight Atlantic 10 Championship with an impressive 3-1 victory on the road against Temple on Sunday afternoon. Rhode Island reached the finals of the A-10 tournament last season and advanced to the NCAA Championship for the first time in school history. The 2003 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship will take place Nov. 6-9 in Richmond, Va., at First Market Stadium. Rhode Island, the No. 6 seed will play host Richmond, the No. 3 seed in the opening round on Nov. 6th at 5:30 p.m.
The Rams got on the board first when senior Sarah Johnston put in a pass from junior Claire Landon to give the Rams a 1-0 lead at the 11:18 mark. Rhode Island took the one-goal lead into halftime.
URI extended its lead early in the second half when sophomore All-American Melanie Kasparek scored what would prove to be the game-winner, connecting on as assist from Landon to give the Rams a 2-0 lead at the 50:15 mark. After notching a pair of assists, Landon scored the Rams third goal of the afternoon, putting in a pass from sophomore Molly Bergren to give the Rams a 3-0 lead at the 62:81 mark.
Temple finally got on the board late in the game when Katie Louth scored with an assist from Johanna Yemm to make the score 3-1 at the 88:46 mark. That would be as close as the Owls would get, however, as the Rams held on to the 3-1 victory.
Elizabeth Tarasevich had three saves in goal for Temple in the setback.
With the win Rhode Island is now 8-8-2, 6-4-1 in the Atlantic while Temple falls to 4-14-1, 2-9-0 in league Play.
