The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team, the No. 6 seed, dropped a hard-fought 2-1 double overtime decision against host and No. 3 seed Richmond in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship at UR Stadium on Thursday evening.
The two teams battled back-and-forth throughout the early stages of the first half before Rhode Island took an early 1-0 lead on a goal from sophomore Melanie Kasparek, the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year at the 36:48 mark. The Rams took the one-goal advantage into halftime.
Richmond knotted the game at 1-1 when junior Olina Vidarsdottir knocked the rebounded midway through the second half. Rhode Island was out shot 12-2 in the second half and ended regulation knotted at 1-1.
After playing a scoreless first overtime, the two teams then headed into the second overtime session. In the 102nd minute, Meghan Ogilive scored the game-winning goal to give the host Spiders a 2-1 double overtime victory.
Rhode Island finished the 2003 season with an 8-9-2 record
