Women's Soccer Blanks Northeastern, 4-0

KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island posted a 4-0 victory against Northeastern in the final game of the URI Comfort Suites Invitational at the URI Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Melanie Kasparek got Rhode Island on the board first when she put in a free kick from junior Claire Landon with under a minute left in the half to give the Rams a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Rams extended their lead at the 56:11 mark when Kasparek notched her second goal of the afternoon, capitalizing on a mistake by the Northeastern keeper to give the Rams a 2-0 advantage. Rhode Island added an insurance goal at the 80:28 mark when senior Sarah McCalligett took a pass from Kasparek and blasted a shot past the NU keeper from 20-yards out to give the Rams the 3-0 lead. URI scored the final goal of the afternoon when senior Danica Ghegan notched her first career goal on an assist from McCalligett at the 87:32 mark.

Sophomore Kirsten Marra made four stops in the shutout win for Rhode Island while Cynthia Slowik had four saves in the setback for Northeastern.

Rhode Island is now a perfect 2-0 for the season with the win while Northeastern falls to 1-1 for the year. The Rams will return to action on Friday, Sept. 5th when they open Atlantic 10 conference play against Massachusetts at the URI Soccer Complex 7:00 p.m.
